Experience this fascinating historic place

The TOLHUIS is located at the southernmost tip of Amsterdam North, on the water of the IJ across from Central Station. This area is called Volewijck, derived from Vogelwijk. Named after the many birds that used to populate the gallows field. Here dangled the corpses of executed criminals who were brought here after their execution on Dam Square.

The TOLHUIS owes its name to the toll that had to be paid to be allowed to sail on the Buikslotervaart. This water is now called the North Holland Canal. At first, around 1660, only the toll collector and his family lived in Het TOLHUIS. Not much later, the toll collector also became an innkeeper, especially because it regularly happened that arriving skippers could no longer enter the city. That is because the city was hermetically sealed in the evening. The new inn right next to the gallows field offered a solution.

The TOLHUIS is of historical value as one of the first places in Amsterdam where a café/restaurant/inn settled. Today it is a future-oriented place that stimulates the movement towards sustainable food consumption with SixtyForty.

Food for the future. Spot with a soul.
